For a while now my least favorite questions about my blog have been: “So what’s the point of your blog?” “Why are you blogging?”
I disliked those questions because I didn’t have an answer. I just liked what I was doing and the people I was meeting and decided to stick with it.
There is something to be said for going with the flow and not worrying about the future and that’s what I’ve done with this blog. (almost) Every week I write some stuff and throw it out into the blogsphere, sometimes it’s great and sometimes its crap.
But I think the time has come to actually have a point to this blog. A raison d’etre.
So what is the point? What do I want it to be? What do I want to come of it? To answer those questions I had to come back to why I even started writing in the first place.
I got into blogging because I was frustrated with HR. I saw practices that treated adults like children and departments that operated as if it was still 1980. I started thinking that maybe HR wasn’t for me.
I started googling phrases like “Why does HR suck?” and “I hate HR.” Eventually I came across HR blogs. In the best blogs I found a voice for a different kind of HR. An HR that was more concerned with solving problems instead of creating more policy. After some long time lurking I finally had the courage to start writing my own blog and HR reMix was born.
Since then I’ve made a ton of great connections and even improved my writing but it’s not enough. In this second year of HR reMix, I’m kicking it up to the next level. I want to start meeting people in real life. I want to attend some conferences. I want to strengthen my connections. I want the frustrated HR pro to find this blog and think “Yes, someone who thinks differently.”
The future of HR reMix is to continue to be a place where people can find a different voice in HR.
To kick off this audacious goal, I’m hosting a series of posts this week where some great voices in the space will talk about the future of HR. Stop by tomorrow and the rest of the week to find out what’s ahead for HR:
Tuesday: Anita Lettink asks Will HR exist in five years ?
Wednesday: Chris Fields encourages us to embrace the present with The Future is Now
Thursday: Buzz Rooney provides excellent career advice and tells us To Get on Board or Get Left Behind
Friday: Greg Moran tells us The Collision Between HR & Technology has only just begun
Congrats Melissa! Way to go!
I really enjoyed reading your posts. I agree with you, I always think I need to push myself, go and attend conferences, meet people in the real life. Hope to see you soon. And all the best to HR remix!
Thanks Nisha, I try to challenge myself every day.
